Displaced Jews at the end of the Second World War
Displaced Jews at the end of the Second World War
In partnership with Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre
David explores what happened to the one million people, including between 200,000 and 250,000 Jews, who were left behind in Germany at the end of the war, who either could not go home or had no homes to go to. These last million would spend the next three to five years in displaced persons camps as the international community debated over their fate. David was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his biography of Andrew Carnegie and he is a professor at City University of New York. There is significant Canadian content in this book as Canadian delegates played a major role in advocating for the establishment of a new International Refugee Agency and the policies of the Mackenzie King government, along with strong advocacy from European-Canadians, brought 120,000 displaced persons, including 15,000 Jews, to Canada.
